Looking for something fun to do for your kids or even as gifts. A recycling project too! Collect up your old crayons and create new versions in the shapes of letters.
A few years ago my eldest received alphabet crayons from her aunty. They were such a cool gift that I wanted to buy the same for my youngest. Then whilst researching I realised I should try and make these myself. I looked up how to create my own and I did not realise how easy it was. I ordered some alphabet molds and collected some cupcake cases. Sorted old crayons and off I went.
1) I started with taking the paper off the crayons then breaking them and putting the crayons by colour into the cake cases.
2) I preheated the oven to 180C and once ready I popped the tray of cases in. I covered the baking tray with foil incase of any spillage, but yes it was that easy.
3) Whilst they were cooking I popped the letter molds onto foil covered trays. After about 10-15 minutes the crayons were melted in the cup cake cases (Time can vary depending on how thick the crayons are and how much are in the cases). Keep an eye on this so they do not burn.
4) Using the oven gloves I removed them from the oven and then carefully poured each colour liquid into the letters I wanted for the crayons. These actually set quite quickly so be sure to try and do it in one go.
Note:I also tried mixing colours which the kids loved or half and half colours. For the half and halfs let the wax set on the first colour slightly first then top up with another colour to finish.
5) Once you have done this let them set before moving. To finish I popped them in the freezer for an hour, which just gave them a shine finish.
6) Then to take them out - pop them out gently so they do not break and ta da! Your own personlised crayons.
The girls have been using these to colour, but next time we will make them and use as name plaques for their rooms. You can also do many shapes. We are going to try heart shapes as well with mixed colours as requested by my girls.
I liked producing them this way so that I have a bit more control on the levels in the mold, but another way to do this is to break the smaller crayons into the letter spaces in the mold. Pop them into the oven in the mold and let them melt into the letter shapes. Just make sure you have an ovenproof mold and be careful to measure it so you do not to overfill and flow over the top out of the shapeand........yes it was that easy!
Happy crayon making!
